Have you ever wondered why the Leaning Tower of Pisa is still standing? Join us at the IIC on January 22, 2015 for an engaging and enlightening lecture by the two leading experts of the Tower’s restoration project. Prof. Michele Jamiolkowski and Prof. Carlo Viggiani will talk about the history of the building and the recent efforts and feats of engineering to stabilize the Tower. Please visit this page for complete information. --------------------------------------------------------------Art competition for high school pupils: The Società Storica Pisana (Pisa’s History Society, Italy) invites classes in grades 9 to 12 from high schools in San Francisco and New York to submit original artwork inspired (in terms of similitude or contrast) by the architectural style known as “Pisan Romanesque”. A ten-foot scale model of the Tower, hand-crafted out of alabaster by the artisans of Volterra, in Tuscany, will make its US debut, courtesy of the City of Pisa and the Pisa Chamber of Commerce. The sculpture will be on display at the Westfield Mall as a part of a month-long promotion, which includes B2B events, lectures, and a school contest.
